Waller/Laurier Road Collapse

For immediate release:

At approximately 1 am on Feb 21 a portion of the road collapsed on Waller Street, south of Laurier Avenue East, at the East Portal construction site of the Confederation Line LRT project. The cause is yet to be determined.

Work crews from the Rideau Transit Group (RTG), who had moved to 24-hour tunneling operations on Wednesday, were working on site. There were no injuries.

Tunneling operations have been suspended while an investigation is underway.
RTG’s geotechnical engineers are currently on site assessing ground conditions in the area.

Since the incident RTG has assessed the site and begun to stabilize the hole by filling it with concrete. As is standard practice in these situations, the tunnel has been filled with a lean mix concrete to stabilize it.

Eastbound Laurier Avenue between Queen Elizabeth Drive and Waller is currently closed. There are flag persons on site and police to assist with traffic.

Transit Services are being detoured.
