Tucked in a corner of the historic Arts Court building in Downtown Rideau, you’ll find the Independent Filmmakers Co-operative of Ottawa (IFCO). Founded in 1991, it began as a vision from a small, enthusiastic group of emerging filmmakers. Their dream was to generate an organization that provides filmmakers in the community with the proper facilities, training and funds to support their dreams of creating independent films. They are now the sole organization to provide this service in Ottawa.
Executive Director Patrice James, pictured here at right, with Technical Coordinator Daniel Oniszeczko has been with IFCO since 1999 straight out of Film Studies at Carleton University. Sharing a best experience, she highlights the Nuit Blanche SPEAKEASY interactive film experience at the Lunenburg Pub in 2014. “The pub was transformed into an interactive shooting set in the setting of the Prohibition era speakeasy. The pub goers and Nuit Blanche patrons were invited to be part of the cast and crew of the film.”
When asked her what she loves about the neighbourhood, Patrice didn’t mince words. “It’s all about location! location! location! [classic film speak] Having a business located in Downtown Rideau is great. It’s centrally located in the hustle and bustle of Ottawa’s Lowertown, with ready access to public transportation, restaurants, shopping and more. For our organization this type of accessibility is essential to our continued success with programming etc.”
They will producing various film training, screening and special events that promote filmmakers and filmmaking. If you love indie film you should definitely check out what’s in the can with the Independent Filmmakers Co-operative of Ottawa!
