It will be the aromatic smells of India that draw you in off the chilly sidewalk at 417 Rideau Street, the friendly warm atmosphere will keep you there, and the delicious food will have you returning time and again.
Owner Shafiquli Haque opened his family run business in 1984, making it one of the longest running Indian restaurants in Ottawa, arguably the longest. He named it after the sitar, “a plucked stringed instrument, originating from the Indian subcontinent, used in Hindustani classical music”, to pay homage to the authenticity of the recipes used in preparing each and every dish.
Longtime staff member Durga Nepal, pictured here, ushered us right in to take photos and offered each a bowl of piping hot curry soup, perfect for taking the chill off the day! He takes great pride in providing an eating experience as close to one you would find in India, without the hefty airfare. Beautiful details in the decor throughout also add to the authenticity.
Meat options include the classic beef vindaloo, tandoori chicken and many more, with seafood on the menu as well. You’ll find a wide variety of curry plates, including plenty of vegetarian options and great combos to choose from for one or two persons. If you want to try a bit of everything, bring a hearty appetite to their daily lunch buffet, Monday through Saturday, 11:45 am – 2:00 pm.
If you want authentic delicious Indian Cuisine at reasonable prices in an inviting friendly atmosphere look no further than Sitar Restaurant. Namaste 🙏🏼
