Ottawa has its very own version of Cheers in The Highlander Pub, where they make a point of knowing the names of their regulars and calling out hello upon entering. The name itself is derived from the Scottish Highlands, an area famous worldwide for its warmth, hospitality and picturesque beauty.
They offer traditional pub food, as well as distinctive Scottish dishes – Haggis anyone?? At the bar you’ll find no less than 250 Single Malt Scotches and 17 draught lines, eight of which are Scottish draughts, Tennent, Innis & Gunn and Brewdog, to name a few.
Chris Mifflen, General Manager of the pub and pictured here, describes his first day wearing a kilt … “It was a new experience for me. We were doing our trivia night and I was making my way upstairs … as I was coming up the announcer stopped the questions and basically announced who I was and it was my first time in a kilt … I received shouts and clapping from everyone in the pub. I think I was red for half an hour afterwards.” No mention of whether it was worn in the traditional fashion.
Chris and his team strive to offer the best experience to each guest with great food, their vast selection of drinks, and engaging entertainment, such as live music, scotch tastings, trivia nights, Taco Tuesdays, $10 Fish Fridays, etc. The scotch tastings are hosted by none other than Highlander bartender and scotch expert David Sharp.
In addition to the Haggis, another specialty of the house is the Scottish Southern Fried Chicken. Yes, you read that right and – little known fact – Scots from the Isle of Skye brought this dish to the Carolinas in the U.S. when they immigrated. They serve Certified Angus Beef® Burgers patties in either classic all-dressed or shake it up with a variety of other interesting toppings. You’ll also find tasty veggie options like the tacos seen here (on Tuesdays), a house-made Veggie Burger, Veggie Samosa Sandwich and more.
Understandably they’re rather excited for the opening of the LRT, given its their neighbour, and look forward to what the future has in store. Rumour has it they’re planning a pretty stellar reno for the patio, stay tuned!
