Stone & Water

50 Rideau St Nordstrom | Artist: Yechel Gagnon. Montreal, Quebec

“Gagnon uses wood-working tools to cut into plywood. The wood is custom made of about 20 layers of impossibly thin sheets, colored in dark veneers and tans. She knows which layers have which colors, and she cuts down until she gets to them: to the browns for her lines, to the ambers for shadows, to the tans for neutral space.”

50 Rideau St Nordstrom | Artist: Peter Hoffer. Bradford, Ontario

“Peter Hoffer is a Montreal-based artist known for his textural landscape paintings that employ a variety of new mediums and techniques. Trained in both sculpture and painting, Hoffer’s attention to materiality is always evident in his work. He paints directly on wood panel and often leaves part of the surface visible. Hoffer finishes each painting with a clear resin, a material that he began using while studying at Concordia University in Montreal in the mid 1990s.”

50 Rideau St Nordstrom | Artist: Akiko Hiromoto. Seattle, Washington

“Akiko was born in Hokkaido, Japan, She moved to Taiwan at an early age and eventually immigrated to the United States after she got married. Akiko finds inspiration in fabric patterns, weavings, found objects & images, and the unique color patterns she encounters during her travels and daily life. Her work is about the exploration of process and color. She works through building up and scraping away paint to excavate the image within. Her canvas is a playground where she plays with the line qualities, arko-making, shapes and colors.”

50 Rideau St Nordstrom | Artist: Carol Browning . Denver, Colorado

“Carol Browning earned her BFA (with honors) in painting from University of Colorado Denver. She spent 20 years as an Interior Designer, all the while keeping her passion for painting alive, until she made the decision to give painting her full attention. Recent paintings by Browning are a series of abstract expressionist work that delve into composition, juxtaposition of form and color. They are about passion, purposeful brushwork and movement of paint and line across the canvas. Each piece begins with a bright color palette, influenced by western light. Layers of neutrals, washes and gestural marks are added until only hints of the original conception remain. It is akin to peering into the artist’s soul. The artist works and lives in Denver. Her work is held in collections all over the United States.”

50 Rideau St Nordstrom | Artist: Bryan Ryley. Vernon, British Columbia

“Throughout his career, Bryan Ryley’s work has moved back and forth among three media – painting, drawing, and collage, with forays into sculpture and photography. In each medium he explores structural systems and serial compositions, developing new voice with each change of material and scale. Ryley’s lyrical tones and richly textured color is reminiscent of a classical modernist abstraction rooted in Cubist collage and Surrealist inspired abstraction.”

Deliberating Time

50 Rideau St Nordstrom | Artist: Treasure Frey. Los Angeles , California

“Treasure Frey is an instinctual artist, working in the moment and within the rhythm of life around her. She is fascinated by the natural world and the people and things that flow through that space, observing and recording with color what she sees and senses. Her recent work has become more minimal—elemental, but still using the color saturation -and focuses on relationships that mark her earlier, more illustrative work.”

Weaving Time

50 Rideau St Nordstrom | Artist: Monika Bravo. New York , New York

I am mostly interested in process, and how through it I can decipher my relationship to space, not just physical, but emotional space… I had a strong desire to become an astronaut after witnessing the first Moon landing on TV; few years later, I studied and learned several languages wanting to work as a simultaneous interpreter. At age 9, my mom bought me a SRL photographic camera, since I had not shown any promise in art classes, allegedly. At fourteen during a trip I took to Italy, I knew I wanted to study fashion design, and live far, far away from my native Colombia. After many turns and experiences, I spent time studying fashion and photography in Rome, Paris, London. I also lived in Athens until I took a two weeks trip to Colombia that lasted four years, where I taught photography. One day in 1994, I booked a one way ticket to New York City where I relocated to pursue a career in the Arts. I am now a multi-disciplinary artist.”

Horn 11

50 Rideau St Nordstrom | Artist: Jonathan Forrest. Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

“Forrest’s abstract works often incorporate vibrant colour and contrasting texture. As Forrest says, “I like all aspects of colour. Even the heavy black, grey and ochre paintings I make are colour experiences.” While Forrest finds inspiration in the works of early modernist, geometric and abstract painters, he strives to take abstract painting in a unique direction.”

On All Other Nights

50 Rideau St Nordstrom | Artist: Deborah Zlotsky. Delmar, New York

“Deborah Zlotsky works experimentally, beginning with a mark of color in her abstract paintings, or a layer of powered graphite in her semi-abstract drawings, and allowing the gradually forming shapes and images to guide her composition. As she explains: “I work responsively, constantly altering relationships in a process of accumulating, assembling, and revising.” Through this process of pro- and regression, Zlotsky creates robust works, whose muscular forms seem barely containable. Her paintings are full of colorful, interconnected geometric structures resembling honeycombs or carved blocks, dappled with smudges and drips. Her monochromatic drawings abound with animal-plant-human hybrids that seem both plausible and improbable. Though her process is intuitive, Zlotsky approaches her work analytically and grounded in art history.”
